Trim Choices

So I want to make something new for Faire, and I will be going in a Month from now, so of course I want it down ASAP, I have fabrics and I did want some silk taffeta to be my forepart and sleeves. Then I remembered I had these piece 12 I got from eBay for I think $20.00 with shipping. I have pieced 3 of those pieces together, they are not with the design going vertical but horizontal. I have 2 trims in my stash:

This one above I don't have a lot, good thing I know where to get more of it at a good price.

This one on the left I have 40 yards of on hand.

So if anyone reads this at all? Could you give me some help in choosing?

Costume College Recap!

New Hotel the Marriott Warner Center,

What I loved about the Hotel:
Room 17 Floors!
Space- More Rooms set up for classes!
6 working elevators
Restrurant- Very tasty if expensive
Customer Service- Everyone was on the ball, and professional

What I did not like:

If you were paying for your hotel room with a debit card they charged your entire time plus $200.00 for incedentals!!!

You had to have all of the names of the people who were rooming with you at check in or you would be held responsible for all charges!! Gulp! So this was my first time having roomies I had never met, so I learned a lesson! But it was easy to fix once I get the information!!!

The tables in the rooms are sized for lecture writing space, not for cutting tables or even sewing tables, this posed issues for workshops, plus those of us who were in workshops got really tiny rooms, so this is something that needs to change for next year. I have done this workshop 4 times now, in 2 hours everyone has their peices cut out and pinned and those who will not be embroidering could begin to sew, typically in 4 hours from beginning of class most of the Smock is done, instead we had to share space by combining 2 tabels for cutting and well we got some of the smocks cut out....it was a little dissappointing.

My class on Renaissance Fabrics was up against another Renaissance Workshop so I did not have the amount of people I usually have, however, they were a fun bunch!

This year was the theme of Steampunk, which I have wanted a reason to begin to collect for this, while I never really thought of Victorian as a time period for me, the fantasy of Steampunk has caught my imagination. Of course the hubby wants an outfit as well!! LOL so we shall probably be looking dapper at WonderCon next year in April.

I am hoping to be able to decorate for the Time Traveler's Tea next year. I put in a proposal but I have not heard as of yet....

Doublet Issues!

Well, I found out even with me setting 1/2 inch seam allowance, when I put my French Seams in? It took so much that now my lovely deep Aubergine Linen doublet is now 3 inches too small!!

I am making another I have add 3/4th inch all around to see if this will make the French Seams work. As soon as I find my camera I will take pictures!

Linen Doublet & Kirtle Project

Drama from the upcoming surgery, has me stressed so while I waited for the upteenth phone call, to tell me any news on when this event will happen, I decided to put together this diary and well get started. Here are the Linens, the Gray for the kirtle and the Aubergine for the Doublet. I have some options on Trim, A: Fleur de lys, B: Purple, Silver, Black C: Purple and Silver D: Purple, Silver, Black, Green, Teal. I am leaning towards option C: Purple & Silver.

So here is my mock up on Paper Tape Cilean, or PT Cilean, I draped this pattern myself.
Posted by PicasaAnd this is the redrafting to a Toile fabric that is heavier and I can then use that to fit to my body.

This is the Doublet pinned to PT Cilean, I am now heading to my Local SCA meeting in hopes that someone could help me fit, I am bringing my Smock and PoF so that this could happen.

Birthday, Eclipse, Viral Worms and Blackouts

So it is or was my birthday July 5, I really wanted to go to the beach but .....traffic through the 5 and 580 by my home made that a dream not to be. I did invite several people to join us and they showed up and we were able to have a great day, nothing huge, nothing planned in fact, just a nice day with friends.

July 3, 2010, laptop acting up, keeps saying I have an infection and I must get a new Anti-virus... seems the anti-virus is the trojan horse that puts itself in your drivers and basically as you get online it will shut off your access. Then it calls up nasty porn (Not the good stuff mind you ;0p ) and Ciallis, and the little blue pill. SO when you go to open your machine? You have a history of going to several porn sites and other sites - this puts the "Mal" in malware. Hubby took most of the 3rd to the 5th getting this crap cleaned up and clearing my machine and rebuilding it with Windows 7.

So I did not have computer usage for most of the weekend which was torture, I really had no idea how much I depended on this venue for connection to the outside world.

Eclipse, so I tried to see it 29th/30th of June but a friend chose not to go so then I wanted to go July 1st because I was off of work, Hubby asked if he could see it but wanted to see the 2nd movie before he saw the 3rd one. This meant I could not see it until July 4th because we could not find it in the stores to rent and so I bullied him into renting from iTunes and watching it via his brand new Apple Laptop. July 4th the heat was pretty awful and so we cooked and got ready to join my Son's Girlfriend's Family at a nearby park.

So early July 5th, we go up to the Movies...and they have a blackout! So off we went to the Store to pick up eggs and ice (which no one had) and then home to make home made ice cream before people showed up.

Poeple left about 8ish and I finally got the chance to watch the movie at 9:15pm. I really enjoyed it, it was fun and told some of background within the Cullens. There could have been more in my thought back in #2 New Moon, but some is better than nothing.

No Garb making, I have to finish the tunics and 2 smocks for friends then I can begin to do something fun for myself.

The Kirtle~ Mock Up for Bodice

I can tell you I am going to use my Margo's Pattern for the Kirtle's bodice and then I am going to cut the skirting into 6 panels because my waist is 45 inches (I know I am working on that) I am going to make sure I have some Box pleat space so I am going to to the panels at 10" at one side and 44" at the other side. This will give me 60" around my waist to box pleats in and 264" at the bottom of the skirt.

I am also going to try an Elizabethan technique I can use on my sewing machine, I am going to use a French seam on this because linen can fray like the dickens. I am using linen both to line and outer fabric, so I think the French seam will hold up over time.

So first I need to get my bodice Toile fitted, I am hoping my Mom can help me with this later today.

I am using I think 2 inner of cotton duck, and then making the boning within these and then adding the linen outer and inner. Then ick! Making lacing holes, my least favorite thing, but I do like them better than grommets.

So there is my next couple of days, I hope to get it down quickly

Musings on English Fitted Gowns

So I have several patterns I could use to make the English Fitted Gown. I own the Tudor Tailor Book but I also have the new pattern from them to make the Women's Gown. I also have Reconstructing History's version as well. I have my Margo's Bodice and Doublet that I could in fact create my gown from as well

I had gotten my Burnt Orange Linen the wrong name for Elizabethan Color what I have is Orange-Tawney. So I am happier with this added to my Murrey Linen. This will be a washable outfit, and it will have sleeves for the Kirtle that will be detachable to make it wearable in the HOT climate of Northern California. I have issues with the heat and I just can't deal with the wools, even the summer weight ones that I have tried and had to take them off in order to deal with said heat. I doff my hat to those of you who live in humid climates I would be sick, and could not wear my beloved Elizabethans due to the weather constraints.

It looks like I will be needing a new Smock as well, and I will be making the Faux ruff that the ladies around their necks!

More later!
