Do you all know that song? It is a song about the end of a woman named Suzanne, the person who sang the song wrote it from his grief of a life that was cut short, that he always thought they would get together again. I did as well. I thought perhaps one day, I would see my person and we would be able to deal with the issues we had that brought an end to our friendship. You don't know how many times something from the past would come up and I would laugh and think wow Sam would think this was funny....
Soon someone will make plans to end Sam's life on this plane, they will take her I know who is of the same name, they will make the plans to do the same, she lay in a hospital bed many miles from me, and she is dying. If you knew this woman you would know how full of life she is, how she is only less than 6 months older than I am. How we were inseparable for most of our 20's and 30's and how our friendship ended, perhaps because we were too enmeshed in each others lives.
We became fast friends when we met in a Summer Sign Language course. It was supposed to be for people who actually knew some ASL but I misread and decided to stick it out, best choice I ever made.
We made a promise to grow old together and she is breaking that promise. We are old I guess at 50, but that is the new 30 so we should have time, even though we don't speak, it does not matter, she is leaving me behind Dammit! I knew something was going on I was having obsessive needs to speak with her, when I had not spoken to her since 2000. Why after all of these years was I dreaming of speaking with her, or having bits of our fun times come forth?
She was one of the Maids of Honor at our Wedding, we lost the Best Man 2 years ago. He was 40. Why could she not go the doctor? Why?
We worked Renaissance Faires together, laughed and cried together, she was there for my children's births. She is my 20's and 30's, she had this vibrato that was horrid, but she would belt it out no matter what because she was SAM. The world will be smaller when she is gone. I was not part of her life for her or my own 40's. She turned 50 in February of this year, and I did in July, I thought of her on my day and I thought of her on hers. Sam died November 23rd at 1:23 am. I never had the chance while she was alive to say good bye.
Fire and Rain from James Taylor:
Just yesterday morning, they let me know you were gone.
Suzanne, the plans they made put an end to you.
I walked out this morning and I wrote down this song,
I just can't remember who to send it to.
I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I'd see you again.
Won't you look down upon me, Jesus, You've got to help me make a stand.
You've just got to see me through another day.
My body's aching and my time is at hand and I won't make it any other way.
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend, but I always thought that I'd see you again.
Been walking my mind to an easy time, my back turned towards the sun.
Lord knows when the cold wind blows it'll turn your head around.
Well, there's hours of time on the telephone line to talk about things to come.
Sweet dreams and flying machines in pieces on the ground.
Oh, I've seen fire and I've seen rain. I've seen sunny days that I thought would never end.
I've seen lonely times when I could not find a friend,
but I always thought that I'd see you baby, one more time again, now.
Thought I'd see you one more time again.
There's just a few things coming my way this time around, now.
Thought I'd see you, thought I'd see you, fire and rain, now.

UFO List is Getting Accomplished!
2 years ago now, in 201o I had 20 projects in various stages of completion. I don't know if every costumer is like me? But if I don't have the expertise to finish something? I put it aside until I do! Or sometimes another project will take precedence because of various reasons. I have 3 projects that are just hand work, which hurts my hands so I am very slow at completing.
Then I was out of commission for a while so most of those 20 projects have just sat in my house, getting pieces lost. Now I am finding said pieces, and putting the things back in place so that I can complete them! Thus my Unfinished Objects are becoming finished!
A. Raisin Tourney Gown 90% complete
I have lost the sleeves with their glorious Fleurs! I have no idea where they are or if I will ever find them, I wore the gown at Purgatorio 2012 and people really liked it! Do I have pictures of said completed Gown? Nope, because I take the photos I rarely remember to have someone else take them of myself.
B. Lovely Fabric made into Jacobean Jacket Re-do
85% complete I am trying to finish adding the trim by hand so who knows how long this will take? LOL
C. Spanish Purple & Cream Gown with Cream Kirtle. 75% of the Beading & Pearling is done I now take this with me all over I am hoping to get this done while we are at GWW. Kirtle is in pieces, so it is only 40% done.
D. Spanish Woolen Gown in Aubergine 85% done, I need to add the lining in the jacket and put together the skirt.
E. Men's Jerkin and Pants in Black 90% done, will need to have this done for GWW.
F. Men's Jerkin & Pants Blue Damask 30% Must be done for GWW.
G. Men's Jerkin & Pants Gray Velveteen 0% done Cut out
H. Men's Jerkin and Pants Black Velveteen 65% done
I. Men's Jerkin & Pants Blue Linen 0% done Cut out

Eleanor of Toledo's Gowns
I have always adored the clothing Eleanor of Toledo a fellow Spainard (I know I have 11 races so I can claim whom I choose LOL).
She married and had I think 11 living children, I don't know how many pregnancies though and I have heard her hips were distorted because of the child birth. Can you imagine?
Amyway she was a fashonista supreme, here are some thoughts I am thinking about making a gown inspired by her.

Another Piece for Inspration
I have adored this outfit, and when the Ladies from Tudor Tailor said this 'waistcoat' has been showing up in womens will accountings since 1550's in England, it means I can have one of these myself! Yum!
I have fabric already (You know I do) so I need to draft this up and I am working on a kirtle in a deeper tone of emerald green with a russet for the waistcoat! Yeah!

Colors in Elizabethan England
So I was checking out the fabulous group on Facebook called 'Elizabethan Costume' if anyone here loves this time period like me? Do check out this group, I have learnt so much during my time with them!!! Anyway, click here and will lead you to an extensive look on the colors given to QEI from the people in her Court and Peerage. Even a description of the colors and when it was first showed up, like the term "pink"or Purple. I have a class I give on how to get Fabrics that are representative of the Renaissance and I always add things about the colors, types of fabrics and the like. So this has been very exciting for me!

Which meant I would need to begin this project April 14, 2012 and finish within a week to have her entered into Competition. I further wanted to use only what I had currently in my Stash. Thursday, I asked my son to help me go into the bins to see exactly what I had, and here is a picture of what I will be using.

It begins! We are in So Cali, and measuring the crap out of Mina. I need to have all measurements I can so that when I get back home 400 miles away, I can refer to them as I create. We made a toile for her bodice and skirts. Mina's Mom found an old PoB that she had and it fit Mina almost perfectly, we spent most of the day redoing shoulders and having her walk around about to see how we needed to fix, just in case. Also most of this would be a learning experience for my BFF as well, who always needs a little kick in the patootie to make more things for the family.

Spanish Farthingale!
We used Margo's Patterns an so the Farthingale did not give us much worry, we have to put the reeds into the channels and that is done, Oh! Fastener I forgot them at home so I need to bring them down for Fridays session of sewing on closures!
Toile made for Bodice, bodice pieces cut out, Forepart pieces cut out, Sleeves pieces cutout, and hat pieces cut out! All will be assembled Friday and Saturday.
Monday April 16, 2012~
Set up Linen for Smock and embroidered pieces for cuffs and neck pieces. Spent the most part of the day sick and in the bathroom, really upset at that but what are you going to do? On the left is linen embroidered by Myst, and waiting to become a smock.
Tuesday, April 17, 2012~
Still really sick with this nasty cold! ARRGH!! But I still tackled the skirts which are 42" and I am using 2 of the widths, which means 120" into 28". I also have some faux wool - otherwise known as fleece back in February, at 75% off, that I will band into the waistline as I cartridge pleat for nice fat pleats! Not much done other than sleeping, cleaning the house, and well putting things into the bins so that it will go down to So Cali to put it all together.
Smock in 3 hours
Well I teach people how to make smocks easily and pretty! So it was fairly easy if you have 2 sewing machines, when you get bored of one project, you move to the other, I cut and pinned the smock and then zigzag'd (Oh the humanity) for quickness the linen.

DayQuil is my new Goddess, it made me feel human again, so Off to the Races we go!
Bodice Making Day!
So there are three layers of this bodice, blue towards the body, a heavier canvas, and then Damask
I use Twill Tape channels and then the Zip tie pieces I make to fit them nice and sturdy. I also placed them on the sides of the back so that when we make the eyelets, it will be sturdy as well.
Here is 2 of the laters sewn together and pressed, I can't stress enough the use of a good iron and pressing the pieces as you go.
Same as above, showing the seams being ironed down to make a smooth layering with the blue linen.
Here is the finished piece, I need to iron the blue lining and then sew it down and place and put the lacing eyelets in, then my Niece will cover them with floss. This is 4 hours of work done!!!

Gown Skirt put together and marked for Cartridge pleating. Used the Simflex to make sure it was perfect, I have to pleat down 120" into a 28" waistband! I use 3 lines of 40lb fishing line (same thins I use for my Ruffs) to make it simple to pull and gather. I did not gather as it was already 1am when my son was doing the final dots, and so I folded and packed for Saturday.
Friday April 21, 2012
~ Drive day, we got out at 1:30pm which put us into BFF's home by 8:30, 100 miles away from home, I figured out? I did not pack my Farthingale! So a quick stop to Joann's in So. Cali and I was putting together a quickie Farthingale for myself!!
Glued 140 gems to the forepart, added velveteen to the bottom to make sure it made the 42". Glued Gems to Hat
HERE IS MY EPIC FAIL!!!
What you can't see? Is me cutting this too short 3" too short! This is what happens when you make something at 1:00AM!!
Saturday~ April 21, 2012 11:30pm
Began to attach Forepart to the rest of the skirting, it is 3 inches too short!!!!! So I added another segment of Velveteen, and some more trim. I almost cried I was so sure I had the correct measurements, but it got fixed and we did not have to worry!
Showed BFF and Daughter how to Cartridge pleat easily, however the chalk had faded so I got a deeper color and had Mina redo the dots. I also had her learn how to make the sewing lines, with an awl and a doll needle. We pulled the 3 lines together to form the pleats and she sewed the pleats to the waistband.
Final fitting~ It looks like I will need to futz with the forepart, we wanted to use as much of the lovely silk as we could but now I understand it should be a trapizoid (Yep using geometry terms yet again).
The entire gown is done it took all 7 days, because I was sick Monday and Tuesday, and here is the result of all of our efforts!
Sunday, April 22, 2012
At the end of the day or I should say? The beginning of Sunday, we did not use the Pill box hat, because a coif I had made before just fit her better!
We were #4 in the competition, but alas we did not win, however? The Queen did speak to her, while on progress to mouth to Mina that her gown was "Most Splendid", that made her day. So for me? It was a win win, I have never entered a competition at a Faire or in SCA with any of my pieces. I am going to use this on for the Iron Dress Competition, as well as the Gown I am making for myself.
Remember? The only thing we did not create for this gown during the 7 days we had to make it? Was the Pair of Bodies (Corset), it was made by her Mother a while a go and the coif that I brought with me. I still had to alter the PoB to make it fit Mina, much easier than making a whole PoB!!!

Always Keep Your Promises.....Yeah Right!!
So I promised my BFF's Daughter my niece a new spiffy Elizabethan....and that was last year and well now I am in the process of making her an entire outfit from the skin out in a week. So this is STASH time, I have a huge amount of STASH, and as soon as we got home from Pennsylvania for a family wedding and I spent 1 day sick with a nasty cold, it was time to find all of the items I would need to create her gown! I knew what she wanted-last year the Queen of the Southern California Renaissance Faire, was wearing a Red/Gold Damask outfit. She wanted something similar, which I have in the STASH! So Thursday April 12, 2012 by 4:00pm PST, I had gathered the fabrics needed to create the outfit, and placed them in a plastic bin for transport.
3 Yards if 3 oz Linen in White @ $4.00 per yard $12.00
Black Embroidery Thread and Design $ 2.00
Red Spanish Farthingale Linen @ $3.50 $ 7.00

It begins! We are in So Cali, because I promised my BFF's Daughter that she could have a real Elizabethan gown to rival the Maids of Honor at Faire. There will be a Competition for Historical Clothing Sunday 22, 2012. This is a week away, Here is how we put together a complete outfit from the skin out!
So taking every measurement I could, I began to make a Pair of Bodies, and then I remembered her Mom has one that was too small for her back in the day, since I also know she does not throw out anything, a quick search (for us), and YES! It is a little large but she has space to grow into, and it works!

Saturday- April 14, 2012~
Sunday April 15, 2012 Spanish Farthingale!
Monday April 16, 2012- Set up Linen for Smock and embroidered pieces for cuffs and neck pieces.
- Smock done
Wednesday, April 18, 2012~
- Bodice ~ Done Grommets will be done on Saturday.
- Sleeves~ Done with grosgrain ribbons for tying.
- Farthingale~ Channels done! Used reeds for boning

Gift for Friend Grey Linen with Purple embroidered....Can't find pieces!
1 Kirtle in teal -Need to find sleeves (Again SIGH)
I have dozens of things that are actually sitting about but, I am getting things done, I have to spend the rest of February and March getting the Guys things done and when I have some time I can do my own things that have been sitting forever! I am hoping by the time March Crown arrives my 45 peices of UFO's will be down to 4. Hey? I have hopes not reality.....!!!
On a side note? Don't bring any boxes from big warehouse places, we brought in some and invited some unwelcome guests to our home. While the Exterminator said he could not find any evidence of said infiltration? We have seen them and so we had to have the entire Kitchen taken apart, put into bins and stored in our dining room. Our Kitchen is 18 X 20, seriously HUGE. It took almost 8 hours to get everything out and into bins. Exterminator arrived at 8am sharp, and it has taken 4 days putting things back into the Kitchen after spending 1 whole day washing every surface! The best thing is that We get to organize! I love this but it put my creative projects on hold.
Tomorrow~ Silk Painting!!
Fettburg is going to be making silk Banners. I will be taking pictures to show people what we are doing!
